Situated in County Kerry on the Dingle Peninsula into the Atlantic Ocean, Dingle sits on the banks of a natural harbour and at the Foot of the Slievanea mountain. The town of Dingle is one of the major tourism highlights in Ireland with stunning natural beauty combined with a atmospheric town and excellent entertainment.
The town of Dingle sits in an Irish speaking area called a Gaeltacht which means it is a hotbed of Irish culture and language. Most pubs in Dingle will have live traditional music played nightly.
One of the major attractions to Dingle is Funghi the bottlenose dolphin who lives in Dingle harbour. Fungie turns up for all boats touring the harbour with such reliability that an industry has sprung up around him. Fungie was first spotted in 1984 by the Dingle Lighthouse keeper who noticed the dolphin escorting fishing boats in and out of the harbour.
One of the main highlights of visiting Dingle is to tour around the Dingle Peninsula. There are so many areas of natural beauty to be see including the Blasket Islands and Connors Pass. There are countless opportunities to get out of your car and walk.
For families there is so much to do that you will have trouble deciding where to go. No matter the weather there are great spots outdoors and indoors. Outdoor and active families have lots to choose from. Try kayaking in the ocean where they can meet and greet Funghi or visit some of the sea caves near the harbour, abseiling and working as a team on the outdoor ropes and climbing frames at Play at Height just outside Dingle Town or try your hand with some surfing and swimming with the Jamie Knoxx surfschool at various beaches around the penninsula. For the days where the weather is not as good a trip to the Dingle Oceanworld is a must where you can catch a glimpse of the mighty sharks that arrived in 2009. Play at Height have indoor walls so no excuses for getting your hands dirtly. Finally for those who prefer arts and crafts, a trip to Louis Mulcahy Pottery is great to see how the potters ply their trade and you can have a go yourself.
All types of accomodation is available in the area, but we recommend booking early for peak times (July/August). The Dingle Skellig Hotel is a great place for the whole family with creche and kids clubs for the kids and a fantastic spa and leisure area for parents. Menus and restaurant times also cater to children and make it easier for families. For self-catering we recommend the Annascaul Holiday Homes. Use the house as a base close to the fantastic Inch beach and tour around the area with the option of chilling out at night and having a family barbeque.
